A Word of Appreciation
CIRL would like to express its appreciation to the Government of Canada for its financial support in the design and development of the Document Information Tool provided on this website. We would also like to thank the many government and occupational organizations that participated in our consultations.
If you are coming to live and work in Canada, you must bring several important documents with you. In addition to immigration documents, it is important for you to bring evidence of your secondary school, college, or university education. This may include degrees, diplomas, and certificates, educational program descriptions, even detailed course information. It will also be important for you to bring documents that explain as fully as possible, your past work experience such as job descriptions, records, performance evaluations, letters from employers and work supervisors, resumes, and descriptions of training that you may have had at work on in your community.

There are many occupations in Canada for which people are required to have Canadian licenses, registrations, and certificates. Many professions and trades have special procedures that new Canadians must go through before they can work in Canada. This can be difficult and it can take a long time, because you may be required to undertake more education before you are allowed to practice your profession or trade here - even if there are skill shortages and even if you have been practicing your occupation in your home country for a long time.

Some of the most important documents you can bring with you are the ones that describe in detail your education and occupation in your home country. Canadian organizations will review these documents to determine whether you will be allowed to practice your occupation in Canada.

Most of the documents you bring must be submitted to authorities in English or French (depending on where you intend to live in Canada) and you will be required to pay the cost of translations. It is important to obtain translations from qualified translators.

You can use this Document Information Tool to help you decide what documents you should bring with you to Canada. If you wish to have these documents translated before you come to Canada, you can use the services of Translations Canada, an on-line translations service, by clicking here.

Below, click on the occupation you wish to practice in Canada and the province/territory in which you intend to live. Then click on "Display Document". Canadian organizations may have additional Canadian document requirements for you to complete once you arrive in Canada.

The information contained in this Tool was current as of March 2004 and will be updated regularly. However, it is subject to change without notice. You should contact the organizations referenced in the reports to ensure you have the most up-to-date document information.
